What is the WRR and what does it do?
The Scientific Council for Government Policy (WRR) advises the Dutch government on future developments of great public interest using a scientific approach. The government can use these recommendations to adjust existing policy and develop new policy. The WRR is part of the Ministry of General Affairs, under the Prime Minister, but decides on its research programme autonomously. The government must respond to the WRR’s reports within three months, after which the report and the government’s response are discussed by parliament. The WRR currently has eight council members, all of them professors, and a scientific office with around 35 staff.
