Social Academia: the development relevance

I read your article about the application of web2.0 technology to researchers with great interest. I strongly believe that changes in the scholarly communication pattern will occur in the coming years and that the traditional methods of publishing will disappear.

Just recently Elsevier just published it's vision on future publishing (see: www.readwriteweb.com).

Unfortuantely I missed in your article any reference to the relevance of the new technologies to development research and collaboration. Will web2.0 allow researchers and authors from the South to become much more active participants in science than they ever could have been with the traditional media?

In a recent article in Science of 20 Febraury 2009 (view article), the authors argue that "Online OA had the greatest effect in the developing Southern Hemisphere rather than the wealthy Northern and Western" (viewed 10 august 2009). I guess web 2.0 participation may have similar effects.
